Donald Lenz Sr. was working for Campbell Funeral Service in NY, and saw a need for a funeral home in the Canjoharie area. In 1923, Donald Lenz Sr. married Mrs. Lenz. In 1929, he started the Lenz Funeral Home on West Grand St. in Palatine Bridge. Lenz Funeral Home stayed in Palatine Bridge until 1937. The Lenz family was growing and a bigger home was needed. In that year, Lenz Funeral home moved to 69 Otsego St. in Canajoharie. Mr. Lenz purchased the home from William B. Smith of Arkell & Smith.
60 Otsego St. was built on 1860. It was originally built in the Italian 8 style and in 1890 was remodeled to the Colonial Revival style.
In 1976, Donald Lenz Sr. passed away and ownership was passed to his son, Donald Lenz Jr., who was working by his side at the time.
Donald Lenz Jr. continued the tradition of Lenz Funeral Home until his death in 1989.

Soon after, Lenz Funeral Home was acquired by the Betz family of Amsterdam. The Betz Funeral Home, Inc. had served Amsterdam and the surrounding area for the past 58 years, since the business was originally founded by John G. Betz on Mohawk Place in 1939. Situated at its present location of 171 Guy Park Avenue since 1947, the funeral home had been an integral part and contributor to the community in both civic and public affairs. David W. Betz and John M. (Jack) Betz had expanded the business to include central and western Montgomery County. In 1987, they purchased the Jackson & Todd Funeral Home in Fultonville, which became Jackson & Betz Funeral Home. In 1990, they purchased the Lenz Funeral Home.
Both Don Lenz Sr. & Jr. were graduates of Simmons Mortuary School in Syracuse.
